Transaction type definitions

table showing transaction types and their definitions
Transaction type
Definition
Authorization
An authorization puts a temporary hold on the cardholder's credit card for the amount of the transaction.
Authorization Reversals
An authorization reversal releases the hold that the authorization placed on the customer’s credit card funds. Authorization reversals must be submitted prior to initiating a capture, otherwise the transaction must be voided if it needs to be cancelled.
Completions/Capture
A capture transaction signals to the Bank of America Gateway to send a previously authorized transaction for settlement. The capture amount may be different from the authorized amount. Bank of America requires a capture for each authorization transaction prior to sending the transaction to the card networks for settlement.
Credits/ReturnsA transaction to refund the payment after a Sale has been settled.

 FSA/HRA Support
The ability to authorize and settle transactions related to drug stores and pharmacies which qualify as medical expenses (including over-the-counter eligible healthcare items.)
90% RuleFSA/HSA/HRA card transactions approved for drug stores and pharmacies without an IIAS who register with SIGIS. Related to retailers who attest that 90% of their gross receipts during the prior taxable year consisted of items which qualify as medical expenses (including over-the-counter eligible healthcare items).
Incremental Authorizations
Used to request an additional amount if the original authorization amount is insufficient. Incremental authorizations give merchants flexibility to increase the authorized amount as additional charges accrue.
Level II
(Commercial Cards)
Level II cards, which are also called Type II cards or Purchase card Type II, provide customers with additional information on their credit card statements about their purchases. Level II cards enable customers to easily track the amount of sales tax they pay and to reconcile transactions with a unique customer code.

There are two categories of Level II cards:

▪ Business/corporate cards are given by businesses to employees for business-related expenses such as travel and entertainment or for corporate supplies and services.
▪ Purchase/procurement cards are used by businesses for expenses such as supplies and services. These cards are often used as replacements for purchase orders.
Level III
(Commercial Cards)
Level III data includes additional line-item details about the purchase. It can include details on the items, quantity, and other order information.
Partial Authorizations
An authorization for an amount less than the total amount requested by a merchant for a transaction. When a partial amount is authorized, the capture is not processed. This enables use of a second card/payment method to cover the balance.
Partial Credit
Return of a portion of the total transaction amount to the cardholder.
PINless Debit
A debit transaction sent to a PIN debit network that does not include a PIN.
Recurring/Installment
Automatic payments that occur when a cardholder agrees to make repeated payments to a merchant, often through credit card, on a set schedule.
Reversals
A transaction used to negate or cancel a transaction that has not already been completed/settled.
Sale
A sale is authorization + capture.
Voids
A void transaction prevents the Bank of America Gateway from submitting a previous sale (payment + capture), capture, refund, or credit transaction for settlement. A void transaction will only be successful if received before the next batch interval time, otherwise a refund request should be submitted.
RefundA refund is a follow-on transaction that uses the ID returned from either a payment or capture request. The money is debited from the merchant’s account and returns to the customer’s card.
