Back Office Discounts vs. Promotions

Understand the difference between a discount and a promotion in Back Office

What's the difference between discounts and promotions?

  • A promotion is automatically applied to items as you add them to a ticket based on the rules and promotion rankings you define in the Back Office.
  • A discount has to be manually applied to an item or ticket.

A promotion and a discount cannot be applied to an item at the same time. Promotions are item level discounts (not ticket level). If you attempt to manually apply a discount to an item to which a promotion has already been applied, you will receive a message indicating that a promotion has already been applied. If you continue and apply the discount to the item, the promotion will be removed and the ticket will be recalculated for promotions, excluding that item.

Discounts

Discounts are a great way to provide an incentive to customers to come to your store and purchase more items. Employees have the ability to add multiple discounts on the same ticket (up to one discount for each item on the ticket and one ticket-level discount). Discounts can be applied to sale items but not to return items.

Back Office users can set up the following types of discounts:

table listing discount types and their descriptions
Discount typeDescription
AmountA defined dollar amount.
PercentA defined reduction percentage.
Prompted AmountPrompts the POS user to enter a dollar amount.
Prompted PercentPrompts the POS user to enter a reduction percentage.

Each discount can also have a minimum qualifying amount, which determines the minimum price for an item to be eligible for an item-level discount or the minimum sale amount for a ticket to be eligible for a ticket-level discount. If an item or ticket does not qualify for the discount, the Point of Sale app will alert you during checkout.

Promotions

Promotions are special offers that are designed to promote specific products and/or generate sales.
