Point of Sale solution gift cards are a closed loop form of payment, meaning that the gift cards can only be used at your business and cannot be used as a form of payment across bank or card networks. Selling gift cards
To sell a gift card, you will need to create a gift card inventory item. Gift cards are not prepaid and do not have a value until they are sold as an item. Gift card purchases are normally considered non-refundable; however, state law where you do business may require refunds for gift cards with small balances, allowing the owner to convert the balance to cash. Check with your state to determine if you need to comply with a law and what the minimum balance is. If you need to refund small balance gift cards, use the steps below. This process will ensure that your gift card balances report remains accurate.
NOTE:
The maximum balance for a gift card is $500.
- Create a new product in your Items inventory named "gift card" or similar. Learn how to create an inventory item.
- Click the This product is a gift card option.

- Choose a pricing option for the gift card:
- Create a product for each gift card denomination by setting a price and value for the gift card (e.g., $25, $50, $100). Individual gift card items must be added to your inventory for each dollar amount you want to offer. Leave Price in store disabled.
OR - Allow the amount of the gift card value to be set at the time of sale by enabling Price in Store to allow the cashier to set a custom value at the point of sale. You do not need to enter a Price.

- Select a Category from the existing options.
- Click Save and exit.
- Set up an item in your inventory named "Low balance gift card refund" or similar. Learn how to create an inventory item or follow the instructions above on how to set up gift cards in your inventory.
IMPORTANT! Check your local municipality/state regulations to see if low balance refunds are permitted in your area of business.
- Set the item to allow pricing at POS.
- Leave the tax rate unselected to set it at 0%.
- At the Point of Sale, when you sell that item, enter the price of the sale as the balance left on the card.
- Use the gift card to take payment.
- Provide the cash refund to your customer.
