Typically used for food items, modifiers can be added to items to allow a server or cashier to give special instructions to the kitchen or bar about how to prepare a menu item. Modifiers can also be used as an add on for services. Modifiers can be priced separately or included in the price of the item. 

Modifiers can be set up and managed individually, similar to how a product is managed, or can be managed as a bulk upload through a spreadsheet.

Add or edit a modifier group

Modifier groups can be created to organize modifier items. This allows you to assign and manage multiple modifiers to an item at once. For example, the modifier group “Condiments” is created once and then used by all burgers and sandwiches. Once you create your modifier groups and modifier items, these will be available on the point of sale. 

To add a modifier group


  1. In the Point of Sale Solution Back Office, select Basic Settings > Items.
  2. On the Modifiers tab, select the Groups subtab.

  3. Click Add new.

  4. Enter the new Modifier group name.
  5. Enter the Maximum number of modifiers that can be in the group. It can be between 1 and 250. This is the maximum number of modifiers in this group that will be able to be selected for an item/service.
  6. Select a Type from the dropdown list. The type indicates whether the modifiers are required, included, or extras.

  7. Click Save modifier. Your group is created and appears in the list of Modifier groups as Active.

To edit a modifier group


  1. In the Point of Sale Solution Back Office, select Basic Settings > Items.
  2. On the Modifiers tab, select the Groups subtab.
  3. Search for the Modifier group name.

  4. In the Actions column next to the Modifier group you wish to edit, click the Edit icon.

  5. Edit the Modifier group information as necessary.

  6. Click Save modifier

Add or edit a modifier item

You can create a modifier item to add to a group or let it stand alone. Modifiers can be for a product or an add on to a service.

To add a modifier item


  1. In the Point of Sale Solution Back Office, select Basic Settings > Items
  2. From the Modifiers tab, select the Items subtab.

  3. Click Add new

  4. Add a New modifier name.

  5. (Optional) Add a Code name.

    NOTE: A code name is a 1-2 character short name, or abbreviation, associated with an item. The kitchen staff would know the meaning of the code name and it would print out on the kitchen ticket/chit.

  6. (Optional) If the modifier has a raw item that you would like to associate with the modifier, which would appear as the base product for the modifier on the point of sale app, start typing the name of that item in the Product-Raw field. Select the item from the dropdown list. To appear in the list, the item must have previously been setup as a raw product.

  7. Select whether a restock on a return is required. 
  8. (Optional) If you would like to associate an ingredient with the modifier, you can click +Add ingredient and enter the Ingredient name. In the Product-Raw field, start typing the name of how this ingredient was setup as a raw product. Select the ingredient from the dropdown list. Enter the number of Units the ingredient will use. Repeat as needed.

  9. Click Done.

To edit a modifier item


  1. In the Point of Sale Solution Back Office, select Basic Settings > Items
  2. From the Modifiers tab, select the Items subtab.

  3. Search for the item you wish to edit.

  4. In the Action column, click the Edit icon.

  5. Edit the item as necessary.

Bulk add or edit modifiers

If you have many modifiers to create or update, it may be more efficient to use the bulk import option to do so.


Add a modifier item to a modifier group

Once a modifier is created, it can be added to a modifier group.

To add a modifier item to a modifier group


  1. In the Point of Sale Solution Back Office, select Basic Settings > Items.
  2. On the Modifiers tab, select the Groups subtab.
  3. Search for the Modifier group that you wish to add a modifier item to.

  4. Under the Actions column, click the Group Items icon.


  5. Search for the modifier item you wish to add to the Modifier group, select it, then click Add.


  6. Complete the relevant instructions for the modifier you have added to the group.


  7. Click Save.
