Frequently asked questions regarding taxes in the Back Office

What's in this article?

Tax Categories

How many tax categories am I able to create for the items I sell?

You can configure as many tax categories as you feel necessary for the items that you sell, and designate a specific tax category to use as the default while creating a new item.

NOTE:
Essentials Light supports a maximum of two tax categories.

Can I edit or delete a tax category?

Yes. You can edit the tax rate or the tax category name. You can also delete a tax category. If you move to delete a tax category, the system will alert you if there is any sales activity associated with It. You can then determine if you still wish to remove it.

Can I override a company-level tax category if I am in a location where the tax rate on an item is different, or if an item is non-taxable?

Yes you can, however, you can only set the tax category for an item to one that has already been created at the company level. For example, a bracelet has a default tax category set to Standard Tax (7%). The main store leaves the bracelet's tax category to Standard as this item is taxed in their state. You could override the tax category for the bracelet to the Non-Tax category (0%) if the item is non-taxable in a different location/state.

Is the use of tax tables to calculate sales tax supported?

Yes it is supported in Restaurant Solution. You can create a tax table for each jurisdiction.

Can I synchronize my online taxes with the tax configuration for my store?

Yes, after you have configured the taxes for your store, you can synchronize the online taxes with your store tax configuration.

Is there a solution that provides the capability to collect and pay taxes to the government?

No. Neither of our solutions support this.

Can I setup sales tax based on subtotal?

No. Sales tax is applied at the item level and not based on the subtotal amount.

Tax Locations

I sell in multiple locations that have different tax rates. Is this supported?

Yes. If you sell from different locations that require different tax rates (e.g., a food truck that moved between municipalities) the system allows you to set up and report on the multiple tax jurisdictions.

NOTE:
Essentials Light allows a maximum of two tax locations. Tax jurisdictions are not an option.

If i move from one tax jurisdiction to another, do I have to change my selling location in the Point of Sale App?

Yes. If you take your POS device to another location/tax jurisdiction (e.g., a food truck that moves between municipalities) you will need to change the selling location for the POS. The tax jurisdictions must be set up in the Back Office first, then the POS can be changed as needed when its location changes.

NOTE:
Essentials Light allows a maximum of two tax locations. Tax jurisdictions are not an option.

Can I add, edit or delete a tax location?

Reporting

What reporting is available in Back Office for tax purposes?

Use the Taxes report to see sales by individual tax rates and tax jurisdictions. You can generate this report and send it to your accountant for tax filing.

Is there a way to see a tax breakdown for sales across multiple locations?

Yes, If you sell across multiple locations, the Taxes report will breakdown the tax information for each of your selling locations with sales for the selected date range.
